As professionals we all value the importance of continuing education, however the challenge is in finding the time to pursue this education; particularly for topics of special interest. 

The IPA Executive Certificate Program offers a solution to this challenge with a series of thematically linked and packaged online professional development sessions.

  • Delivery method: CPE Online
  • Session duration: Each session runs for 2 hours
  • Session time: Live online sessions are run at the advertised (Melbourne) times. If you are unable to attend a live session you will receive access to a recording of the session.
  • Evidence of participation: E-certificate on completion
  • CPE hours: 15 hours CPE credit

Introduction to SME / SMP
Presented by Michael Schaper
Franchising Issues for Accountants
Presented by Jason Gehrke

Dr. Michael Schaper, deputy chairperson of the ACCC, will provide a brief overview of the SME sector in Australia and discuss the competition and consumer obligations of professional Accountants when dealing with fellow professionals and with clients.

Jason Gehrke of the Franchise Advisory Centre will outline common accounting issues associated with Franchises and provide insights into how Accountants can best understand and address their clients' franchising needs.

Taxation of SMEs
Presented by Jenny Daborn

Jenny Daborn from Practising Tax looks at some of the key implications of being a SBE (small business entity) for tax purposes. The session will examine SBE eligibility for concessions, the workings of the simplified trading stock rules, the circumstances under which SBE taxpayers can deduct prepaid expenditure, and the special capital allowance rules for SBE taxpayers (immediate deduction and/or small business pooling).

Workplace Regulation: Key Issues for Small Business
Presented by Nick Tindley

Nick Tindley of FCB will take participants through key staffing issues facing small businesses.  From engagement through to termination, the session identifies key issues during each stage of the employment lifecycle and provides practical guidance on how to successfully navigate through these issues.

Regulatory Issues for Small Business
Presented by Barrie Adams

Barrie Adams describes the value of undertaking a SWOT analysis to enable you to fully assess the prospects for the new venture. You also need to meet with business operators and government officers to obtain business intelligence on what is happening in your local business environment. This session will help you prepare a detailed task list to ensure you have considered all required regulatory steps in establishing the new business.

Session 5: 1 - 3 PM Thursday March 29, 2012
Families, Feuds & Finance: Small Business Succession
Presented by Michael McDonald

Michael McDonald of mdp McDonald describes how to develop an effective succession plan, when do we start and why, and the most common succession events our clients need to plan for. The differences in the treatment of voluntary and involuntary exits from a business are also covered.
