2023 Tax Essentials - Online

2023 Tax Essentials covers landmark tax changes that have arisen over the past year which practitioners must understand to protect clients and maximise opportunities. Our focus is not just to explain the impact of these changes but through case studies to illustrate their practical impact on clients and highlight the specific steps you can implement to optimise your client’s tax position.

2023 Tax Essentials covers five key areas:

  • Understanding the ATO’s finalised guidance products and recent court decisions on section 100A and their impact on trust distribution strategies at year-end, and when distributions will be typically regarded as being low risk or high risk.
  • Explaining all the other tax changes impacting trusts that have arisen over the past year including limits on a trustee’s discretion in making distributions to family members, the tax liability triggered when Australian resident discretionary trusts distribute certain capital gains to non-residents and the practical and transitional issues now that UPEs can no longer be held on an investment loan sub-trust from 1 July 2022.
  • Outlining tax issues that should be considered in restructuring business activities from an existing entity to an alternate structure.
  • Reviewing the ATO’s recent guidance as to when a worker will be regarded as an employee or independent contractor for PAYG withholding and superannuation guarantee purposes.
  • Applying for the new FBT exemption in respect of electric cars including the eligibility criteria for the exemption as well as the hidden traps and costs of packaging such a car.
